Features
Overview: The Garmin Index™ BPM Smart Blood Pressure Monitor measures and displays accurate blood pressure and heart rate readings in the comfort of your home. Index BPM is a compact, FDA-cleared, all-in-one device to help you keep an eye on your health. You can use it as a stand-alone monitor, or you can use the Garmin Connect app to save and analyze your readings and share them with others. Index BPM is for use by adults ages 18 to 75. Its adjustable cuff fits arm sizes from 8.6 to 16.5 inches (22-42 cm), and weighs 11.6 ounces. It is powered by 4 AAA alkaline batteries (included) which have a battery life of approximately 9 months.
Display: The built-in OLED monochrome display measures 1.3" x 0.8" with a resolution of 128 x 64 pixels. It displays your Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure, as well as your pulse rate. The display will indicate a low battery warning when the battery level is lower than 50%.
Measurements: The Index BPM can take a single measurement by pressing the "heart" button next to the display. Each measurement takes between 50 and 60 seconds to complete, depending on the pressure value. With a long press of the button, the monitor can take three consecutive measurements and calculate the average. You can stop a measurement at any time by pressing the heart button again.
Blood Pressure Categories: Your blood pressure readings consist of a Systolic and Diastolic measurement. The combination of these measurements put the readings into one of the following categories, as described by the American Heart Association:
Category | Systolic (mmHg) | Diastolic (mmHg) |
---|---|---|
Normal | < 120 | and < 80 |
Elevated | 120 to 129 | and < 80 |
High Blood Pressure, Stage 1 | 130 to 139 | or 80 to 89 |
High Blood Pressure, Stage 2 | >/= 140 | or >/= 90 |
Hypertensive Crisis | > 180 | and/or > 120 |
Wireless Connections: The Index BPM can connect to your wireless network for uploading your readings to Garmin Connect. It is compatible with IEEE 802.11 b/g/n networks on the 2.4 GHz band only. It uses WPA2 wireless network security. You can also connect to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth 5.0 BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy).
Garmin Connect: To take advantage of advanced features, you should connect Index BPM to the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. When connected to the app, Index BPM will upload your blood pressure and pulse rate measurements. The device will store up to 100 measurements between synchronizations. For extra security, Garmin Connect requires an authentication key provided by the device before syncing your measurements. The app allows you to view your BP measurements, create notes for each measurement, and view your history and trends. Your readings can be viewed in 7-day, 4-week, or 1-year reports, and export them to a PDF, so you can share them with your health care provider. Garmin Connect can send notifications to your smartphone, when enabled, to remind you to take your blood pressure readings. You can also create up to 16 user profiles in the app, to keep track of the readings of each individual.
Clinical Validation: The Index BPM was validated in a clinical trial with 85 subjects between 18 and 75 years old. The results of the trial were within an acceptable margin as defined by the internationally recognized evaluation standard for blood pressure monitors. Index BPM was accurate to within +/- 3mmHg (millimeters of mercury) or 2% of readout value for blood pressure value, and +/-5% of readout value for pulse. Index BPM is an FDA-cleared, Class II medical device.
Disclaimer: Index BPM is a stand-alone medical device that measures and displays blood pressure and pulse rate. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and is not intended for use by children under the age of 18. If the device displays hypertensive or high blood pressure values, you should contact your physician as soon as possible.
