In-Wall Speakers

Sonos Architectural by Sonance: The all-new Sonos Architectural by Sonance is a collection of in-wall, in-ceiling, and outdoor passive speakers (all sold separately) designed and optimized for the Sonos Amp in partnership with Sonance. With a shared commitment to superior sound and great design, Sonos and Sonance partnered with the objective of producing loudspeakers that disappear into any space while providing clear sound, even coverage, high-quality performance, and ease of use.

Two-Way In-Wall Speaker: The Sonos In-Wall by Sonance speaker features a two-way driver design with a 1\” fabric soft-dome tweeter and a 6.5\” polypropylene cone woofer with rubber surround. The tweeter features an integrated wave-guide and is aimable to help with high-frequency dispersion. The woofer provides dynamic, rich mid and low frequencies. These in-wall speakers can be utilized in a two-channel stereo configuration, distributed audio application, or surround sound setup.

Note: These are wired passive in-wall loudspeakers and will require a separate amplifier and connection of speaker wire (they are not wireless or self-powered).

Optimized For The Sonos Amp: Sonos and Sonance have designed these in-wall speakers from the ground up, making them specifically optimized for the included Sonos Amp. When the in-wall speakers are connected to the Sonos Amp, the amplifier will automatically detect them, and automatically adjust its sound to suit the specific loudspeakers. Up to three pair of Sonos Architectural by Sonance speakers can be powered by a single Sonos Amp.

  • Sonos Streaming Services & Multiroom Audio: A connection to the Amp brings the benefits of the Sonos system to every connected Sonos Architectural by Sonance speaker, including an easy-to-use Sonos S2 Controller App that works with all of your favorite streaming services (Apple Music, Amazon Music, TIDAL, Pandora, Spotify, SiriusXM, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and more ); AirPlay 2 control, regular software updates, and the ability to add additional Sonos speakers and components to expand your setup over time for an expansive multiroom audio experience.
  • Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS Only): By connecting the in-ceiling speakers to the Sonos Amp, you\’ll unlock Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS), which accounts for the size, construction, and layout of the room where the speakers are installed and adjusts for the best possible sound. The layout of a room, and where speakers are installed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App, uses the microphone in your Apple iOS 11.0+ device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the in-ceiling speakers to make sure it sounds great no matter where you\’ve placed it.

Note: The Sonos Architectural speakers will work with most amplifiers. However, you will not be able to take advantage of the Trueplay room tuning capabilities with any amplifier other than the Sonos Amp.

Spring-Post Terminals: The Sonos In-Wall by Sonance speakers feature a set of gold-plated spring-post terminals to connect your in-wall rated speaker wire. The spring-post terminals will accommodate 16-12 gauge speaker wire, single or dual banana plugs, and pin-connectors. The gold-plated terminals provide excellent audio signal transfer and resist corrosion. The in-wall speakers are 8-ohm compatible.

Mounting Options: The Sonos In-Wall by Sonance speakers require a rectangular cutout of 6.9375\” (w) x 10.75\” (h) x 3.625\” (d) in the wall. Four integrated screw-down dog-ear clamps secure each loudspeaker against the wall. There should be at least 1.0\” around the edge of the opening inside the wall to accommodate the dog-ear clamps. The outer frame and grille of the in-wall speaker measure 7.875\” (w) x 11.75\” (h) x 0.1875\” (d).

  • If you are using the in-wall speakers to replicate sound from your TV, the speakers should be installed a few inches away from the right and left edges of the television with the tweeter of the speaker installed as close to ear level (from the seating position) as possible.
  • If you are using the in-wall speakers as distributed audio speakers and not flanking a television, Sonos and Sonance recommends placing them in a location that will provide the best coverage for the room.
  • If you are using the in-wall loudspeakers as surround speakers, the speakers should be installed directly to the left and right side or behind the main listening position with the tweeter as close to ear level (from the seating position) as possible.

Note: The in-wall speakers are not rated for outdoor use and should only be installed indoors.

Paintable Grilles: The Sonos In-Wall by Sonance speakers feature specially designed, rectangular grilles which can be painted to match the wall. These slim profile grilles on sit 0.1875\” from the wall.

Integrated Amplifier

125W x 2Ch Amplifier: The Sonos Amp features a built-in
state-of-the-art Class D amplifier that can power large or small speakers so you
can enjoy superior audio in practically any room. Packing 125 watts per channel
into 8Ω or 250 watts per channel into 4Ω,
the Sonos Amp powers even the most demanding speakers. And because the Amp is 4Ω
stable, you can even power up to four speakers instead of just two (or even six of the Sonos by Sonance speakers). Use the Amp
to power your bookshelf, floor-standing, in-wall, and in-ceiling speakers.
Thanks to its centralized heatsink, air inlets, and a discrete output stage, the
Sonos Amp is built to stay cool and deliver lasting power.

  • The Sonos Amp can drive a pair of loudspeakers with a nominal
impedance above 4Ω or two pair of 8Ω
loudspeakers wired in parallel. Do not wire speakers in series to the
integrated amplifier because it will result in poor sound quality. Do not
connect speakers rated at less than 4Ω.
  • In particularly, you can power up to three pair of Sonos by Sonance speakers (sold separately). The Sonos Amp does not support connection of three pair of loudspeakers from other brands.

Applications: The Sonos Amp offers flexibility and can be used in a
variety of applications. Connect your favorite bookshelf, floorstanding,
in-wall, or in-ceiling speakers to the Amp and stream all your favorite music.

  • Connect the Sonos Amp to a pair of loudspeakers for 2ch stereo to listen to network
audio and a connected line-level source.
  • Use the Amp to add stereo sound to your TV through a HDMI ARC connection
    and a pair of loudspeakers.
  • Use the Sonos Amp with a pair of loudspeakers to add surround sound, if you already have a
Sonos home theater speaker – such as the Playbar / Playbase / Beam, or another Amp) connected
    to your TV.
  • Create a multiroom audio system by connecting up two pair of 4Ω of loudspeakers or three pair of Sonos by Sonance speakers (all sold separately)

Optimized Sound: Sonos and Sonance have designed Sonos by Sonance in-ceiling, in-wall, and outdoor loudspeakers (all sold separately) from the ground up, making them specifically optimized for the Sonos Amp through the use of TruePlay Tuning and the Sonos app on your compatible Apple iOS device.

  • Sonance By Sonance: When Sonos by Sonance speakers are connected to the Sonos Amp, the Amp will automatically detect them, and automatically adjust its sound to suit the specific loudspeakers. Up to three pairs of Sonos Architectural by Sonance speakers can be powered by a single Sonos Amp.
Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App, uses the microphone in your Apple iOS 7.0+ device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the in-ceiling speakers to make sure it sounds great no matter where you\’ve placed it.

Note: The Sonos Amp will work with most loudspeakers. However, you will not be able to take advantage of the Trueplay room tuning capabilities with any other brand of loudspeaker, other than the Sonos by Sonance speakers.

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio Eco-System: The Amp is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom audio eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos product and add more Sonos products over time. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Compatible distributed audio sources include internet radio, online music services, local network music libraries, as well as hardwired inputs. Up to 32 Sonos devices and 16 groups can be connected in one system. The Sonos Amp is compatible with the new Sonos S2 operating system (OS) and the older Sonos S1 operating system (OS).

  • Sonos S2 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Five, One SL, Roam, ARC, Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020 will only be compatible with Sonos S2.
  • Sonos S2 and S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, and Sub (Gen 1/2) support both Sonos S2 and S1 operating systems.
  • Sonos S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), and Play: 5 (Gen 1) will only support the older S1 operating system.

Notes:

  • If you have have both, older \”legacy\” Sonos products and newer Sonos products in your system, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems – one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos \”Legacy\” S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Custom Speaker Outputs: A pair of binding-post
terminals provide connection of your speaker wire (up to 10AWG). The
binding-posts are removable and pull-out to expose speaker terminals that will
accept banana plugs (single only). You can connect two 4Ω speakers, four 8Ω speakers, or even six of the Sonos by Sonance speakers.

Mono-Sub Out: The integrated amplifier features a mono-RCA output for
connecting a powered subwoofer (sold separately) with an LFE or line-level
input. The unit will detect when a cable is connected to the subwoofer output
and adjust the low-pass crossover frequency automatically.

Mounting Options: You can place the Sonos Amp just about anywhere – in an electronics rack, on a shelf, on a credenza with your TV, or wall-mounted using a proprietary bracket (sold separately). On a shelf or table-top, mount the integrated amplifier horizontally with a least 3" of clearance around the unit. The Amp will also work perfectly in a rack-mount system. Two Amps will fit side by side in a 2U rack shelf, while four Amps will fit in a 3U rack shelf (side by side & stacked). Using a proprietary wall-mount bracket the Sonos Amp hangs vertically on the wall.

AC Power: The Sonos Amp comes with a detachable 6.5\’ AC power cord that
will plug into the back of the integrated amplifier and into and AC power outlet
or surge protector (sold separately).

Variety Of Sources

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: In order to enjoy internet radio, online music services, your local network music libraries and Apple AirPlay 2, you\’ll need to connect the Sonos Amp to your home\’s wireless network router and ISP (internet service provider). Sonos brings your great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through WiFi or its SonosNet mesh network.

  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home\’s existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g/n; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home\’s existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system\’s wireless range will be dependent on your home\’s existing WiFi network. Sonos products manufactured after March 2014 are loaded with the proper firmware and ready to go out of the box for WiFi connectivity. All Sonos products manufactured prior to that date will require a wired connection to facilitate a firmware upgrade and  hereafter they will be able to work over WiFi.
  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provide superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100\’, depending upon your home\’s layout. In addition to the Sonos Amp, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
Notes:

  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance.
  • WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network.
  • WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz (you will have to use the Sonos wireless mesh network in this case).

Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to its built-in SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network and WiFi, the Sonos Amp is also equipped with one Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps). Use it to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you\’re using a SonosNET Boost setup.

HDMI ARC output supports Dolby Digital, DTS, and 2ch PCM. Some
televisions will only pass 2ch PCM through the ARC-enabled HDMI input from

played back just on the Sonos Amp or in any zone of your Sonos multiroom audio

from Sonos. The HDMI-to-optical digital adapter features a female HDMI
connector on one end to slip on to a HDMI cable\’s male connector and a male
optical (toslink) connector on the other end to plug into your TV\’s optical
digital output (you cannot use a dedicated optical digital cable with the
Sonos Amp). This type of connection will still support Dolby Digital, DTS, and 2ch PCM.

RCA inputs for connecting an external line-level audio device, such as a CD or

System Requirements

Internet Service Provider: You\’ll need a high-speed, wired internet service provider connection such as cable, fiber, or DSL. Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or 4G LTE routers can experience delays between the internet connection and Sonos and are not supported. Using these types of connections can cause music to not play, skip, or cut out completely.

Network Requirements: Sonos can be configured in either a wireless or wired network setup. This article will cover the differences between the two setups and provide recommendations for which setup best suits your system and home network.

  • Wired Setup: A Sonos system operating in a wired setup will require one of your Sonos products to remain connected to the router via Ethernet cable at all times. If your Sonos system is in a wired setup and you use a WiFi mesh router with multiple wireless nodes, we recommend wiring your Sonos product directly to the primary wired mesh node. Avoid wiring any Sonos products to the wireless mesh nodes. If you are on a corporate or advanced network, it must not block Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).
  • WiFi Setup: All Sonos products can connect to wireless routers or access points that support 802.11b/g WiFi over 2.4GHz. Additionally, all Sonos products can connect to WiFi networks that use WPA1 and WPA2 Personal security standards, as well as unsecured WiFi networks. When running S2 software, many newer Sonos products support faster WiFi modes (including 802.11ac) and will connect to them when possible. You can learn more about which Sonos products support which WiFi modes, standards, and protocols in this article.

Notes: Unsupported network setups and devices include –

  • Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or LTE routers
  • Guest networks or networks that use a portal login page
  • Networks using wireless range extenders2

Sonos S2 Controller App: Sonos offers a Sonos Controller app for for Apple iOS 14.0+, Android OS 8.0+, Fire 7.0+Mac OSX 10.11+, and Windows 8+. The Sonos S2 is a new app and operating system (OS) that powers the next generation of products and experiences. In addition to new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward, Sonos S2 enables higher resolution audio technologies for music and home theater.

  • Sonos Controller App Requirements: A compatible Apple iOS or Android device running the Sonos Controller app is required to set up a new Sonos system or add new products. Sonos also supports macOS and Windows versions of the Sonos Controller App, but certain system management features such as setting up a new Sonos system or adding new products, are not available. See this article for more details.
  • Sonos Product Compatibility: Most Sonos products are compatible with S2. Some older Sonos "legacy" products will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power. The older Sonos "legacy" app is referred to as the Sonos S1 app. This article will break down which Sonos products are compatible with Sonos S2 vs S1.
  • Split Sonos System: If you have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems – one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app. Read this article for more details.

Supported Audio Formats: Sonos supports a variety of audio formats for its 2ch stereo products and multichannel home theater speakers.

  • Music Libraries: Sonos supports the playback of your own music library stored on a NAS drive or personal computer. Sonos supports compressed & uncompressed audio formats when streaming from your local music library. Sonos systems support mono (1-channel) or stereo (2-channel) audio files with sample rates up to 48kHz. Sonos music libraries are limited to 65,000 tracks. The memory limit can be reached prior to 65,000 tracks if there is a large amount of metadata. For example, classical music tracks tend to have a large amount of metadata and can use up the available memory before the 65,000 track limit is reached. If you have more than 65,000 tracks, you can use Plex with Sonos as an alternative.
  • Home Theater: Sonos home theater speakers are compatible with a wide range of television and movie soundtrack audio formats. Compatible audio formats will vary by Sonos home theater speakers and by connection method to your TV. While most TVs are compatible with Sonos home theater speakers, some may need additional configuration or may not work with Sonos. This article will describe some basic requirements when using Sonos speakers with your TV.
